Since 2011, Great River Energy had been preparing for a major upgrade to its high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) system. This upgrade would not only extend the life of this vital system; it would also help the utility maintain long-term system reliability for 30 years or more.
To manage this all-important upgrade, Great River Energy awarded a contract to ABB, a multinational automation corporation. In turn, Collins was subcontracted to provide electrical construction and low-voltage support.
Collins executed the preassembly of the new conversion equipment, demolition of the existing valve halls, and installation of the new equipment. Due to a very tight timeline, Collins staffed the project around the clock and was able to meet the completion date.
